From laundry to art: How I started ice dyeing
Sewcial Dyes started with a beautiful moment on a sunny day back in 2017.
I was hanging laundry and reflecting on my role as a stay-at-home mom to my twin eight-year-olds.
As much as I loved being with my kids, I wanted to explore my creativity and find myself again.
That day, while hanging laundry, I had a revelation - why not turn my love for creating into a source of income? Minutes later, I rummaged through my spare room and found some old fabric paint I had used with my sister in our teenage years.
However, I quickly realized that I needed to find a better way to add colour to fabric. After hours of researching, I discovered Procion fibre reactive dyes, which proved to be a game-changer.
But my journey didn't stop there.
A friend sent me a YouTube video on "Ice dyeing," and I was immediately hooked.
I fell in love with the beautiful marbling effects and endless design possibilities that came with it. This sparked my passion for colours, designs, and spreading my newfound joy into the homes of others.
Ice dyeing is a technique that involves tieing any number of unique patterns into fabric, then adding dye powder, and ice cubes.
As the ice melts, the dye flows down through the fabric creating a one-of-a-kind marbling effect, with the most remarkable watercolour characteristics. This process results in beautiful and unique finishes that cannot be replicated, meaning each item is truly a one of a kind piece of art.
When it comes to designing and creating personalized pieces, I take great pride in making sure that my clients' unique personalities and preferences are reflected in every aspect of the piece.
Whether it's a tie-dye t-shirt, a beach towel, or a double sided doona cover, working with my customers to make their vision come to life is so important to me.
One of the things that I love about tie-dye is that it's such a versatile and expressive medium. There are so many different ways to combine colours and patterns, the possibilities are endless, but always uniquely stunning.
Ultimately, my goal is to create pieces that are not only beautiful and unique, but also functional and practical.
I take great pride in the passion I bring to fabric dyeing.
I enjoy every aspect of the process, from meticulously selecting the perfect colours to utilising my refined ice dyeing technique, and witnessing the transformation take place.
The process is truly magical and fuels my passion even more.
